How to align apneumatic rotary valve actuator shaft with a valve stem

Pneumatic Actuator Alignment Procedure

Step-by-step guide for precise shaft-stem alignment

1. Pre-Alignment Preparations

Component Verification

Ensure shaft diameter, keyway, and mounting flange (ISO 5211 standard) match valve specifications. Check for physical damage like burrs or corrosion.

Positioning

Manually rotate valve stem to mid-stroke position. Secure both valve and actuator on stable surfaces to prevent movement during alignment.

2. Mechanical Alignment Steps

Rough Alignment

Align flange bolt holes using guide pins. Gently slide actuator shaft onto valve stem, ensuring keyway alignment. Never force insertion.

Precision Alignment

Use dial indicator to measure radial runout (≤0.005" standard, ≤0.002" high-precision). Adjust with shims as needed.

Critical Torque Specification

Tighten bolts in star pattern to manufacturer's torque specs (typically 20-30 N·m for M8). Over-tightening warps flange.

3. Functional Testing

Manual Rotation Check

Rotate actuator through full stroke (90° for quarter-turn valves). Movement should be smooth without binding.

Air Pressure Test

Apply 30 psi air pressure. Verify full stroke operation and position accuracy using limit switches.

Required Tools
Dial indicator (0.0005" resolution)
Torque wrench (calibrated)
Feeler gauges/shims (0.001-0.010")
Alignment dowels/pins
